Meet Janice: Road to AC70.3

Friday, January 13, 2017

Everyone, meet Janice. She is the one who is going to have to put up with me most over the next250+ days. With unusual 60 degree temperatures in January, there was NO WAY I was going to run inside on the treadmill on a day like that. So we packed up our cars and headed to Fischers Park. Janice's babygirl, Brooklyn, tagged along with us and she did amazing in the jogging stroller. I have a feeling she's going to have to get use to it because IRONmama Janice will most likely be bringing her on more runs than not. It was great to see Janice experience what I do during Ainsley's Angels events pushing.

Brooklyn is a great little distraction and her laughing when we laugh is the cutest thing in the world. I got to pick Janice's brain a little bit and see where she is mentally as we go into this journey called Ironman.

Post-run I hung out at the dark for a little and did my meditation there. With a backdrop like that, how could I not.

I can't help but let doubt creep into my mind every so often...I'm not strong enough....I'm not fit enough...I'm not capable of doing this. Doubt is the worst thing, but it's digging deep and facing that demon head on and saying YES I CAN that will get me through my darkest days of training.

Things are happy go lucky right now but give it a few weeks and tougher days are ahead. But I've learned to appreciate my efforts and believe in me. YES I CAN!!!

A is for Ainsley's Angels

Wednesday, June 1, 2016

I’m a firm believer that everything happens for a reason -- Always have and always will. Running saved my life and running now is my life.

Rewind to January 2011 – I was at the lowest possible place in my life. It was two years post-college and I decided to move back to my hometown. “Go back to your roots to regroup and get your old self back” I told myself. Prior to moving back home, in Fall 2010 my roommate in Baltimore asked me to run a half marathon with her. As a retired Division 1 athlete (who was probably up 30lbs post graduation), I said “sure” and thought it was a great idea to sign up… and not train. With a max 6 miles under my belt, I struggled 13.1 hilly miles in the Blue & Grey Half Marathon in Virginia. Despite the pain, I got the running bug. It turned into my happy place, it still is my happy place. It made Amanda her old self again.

When I moved back to my hometown I asked myself what was my purpose in life? “I’m an athlete” I answered…well not anymore, you’re an old washed up athlete, think harder. Okay…so I asked myself again, what can I do with the sport I love AND give back to someone in the community? Right then and there I signed up to be a Cross Country Coach with our local Special Olympics team. Fast forward to 2014 – four years later, running was now “my thing!” If you followed me on social media, you knew that. My girlfriend Ashley Johnson approached me and said “Hey, my aunt told me about this group called I Run 4, they pair runners with individuals who have special needs. She had her son Callen join the group, he’s waiting for a runner.” Wow, sounded intense, and the Facebook page seemed intense. Some lady named “Run Jodi" was popping up in my newsfeed EVERY day doing jumps and running crazy miles for this little boy named River. As I watched her excitement and joy I told myself, “I want my own River.” I officially signed up.

And then it happened, after 6 LONG months of waiting – I thought I’d get a buddy from California or Florida, somewhere “cool” compared to Pennsylvania. Well my wish came true, I got someone “awesome”, his name was Liam and he lives in IRELAND!  It was then on August 1, 2014 – I found my purpose in life… I am supposed to be supporting others…to use my legs for them, but more importantly, share my heart with them.

Fast forward to October 2015 – with a lump in my throat I typed up a long email to this guy named "Rooster" who is apart of Ainsley’s Angels. I’d seen them for well over a year now on the IR4 page and my friend Elice Johnson has an I Run 4 buddy, Lanie Warner who is with AA. If anyone could help me, I knew he could help make my dream come true, he would maybe let me borrow a chariot to bring to Ireland to race with Liam as I just booked a plane ticket to visit him and his family.

Three hours later an incoming call from Virginia Beach popped up on my iPhone and my life forever changed. While I think Rooster can sell a popsicle to a woman in white gloves, Rooster didn’t “sell” me that afternoon on the phone, he made me realize why I’m here in this world, which is what I thought, to support others. My mind new the answer as soon as he asked, but in less than 24 hours my mind made up the decision, I WILL bring inclusion to Southeastern PA.

Forward to present day – my life and heart is now full. Coming FULL circle, my first rider in SEPA was Callen, the little boy/family who introduced me to IR4 and my first Angels were Ashley and Elice. I have an AAmazing family I would have NEVER imagined having if you asked me 5 years ago where I would be in life.

Every day and every hour my life is full of smiling runners and riders and the most exciting aspect, this is just the START of SEPA. We’re a young and fresh ambassadorship and the future holds endless options. I helped make a dream come true in Ireland (and mine was made) and I’m also helping dreams come true in SEPA. Ainsley’s Angels has forever changed my life and I thank all of YOU for that!

Another Race Season Gone

Friday, October 23, 2015

In 8 days, another running race season will be in the books. Where in the world did the time go?

When I look back at my race season last year, it was full of monumental achievements, with personal records set, and determination to better my overall health. My drive, passion and commitment to running pushed over into 2015 finding the most perfect running group and making a goal for myself of running 15 race in 2015.

Long story short -- 15 races did not happen in 2015 AND I fell off the healthy bandwagon PRETTY
fast. After a tough half marathon in February and heartbreak of not PRing in it, my motivation fell. (As many of your read in my blog post, it's linked below) I think this happened for a reason because running in 2015 became for another reason....to help others.

While I may have not ran 15 races this year, I did compete in 8 events, one being very monumental for me, my first triathlon. This year I participated in the Be Amazo 10k, Quakertown Rotaty 10-Miler, Love Run Half Marathon, Brooklyn Half Marathon, Sandy Hook Triathlon, Runners World 5k, Philadelphia Rock n Roll Half Marathon on Halloween, and the PennSuburban Chamber 5k in December. I opted to sit out the Broad Street Run this year and with cash being tight, I had to strategically create my race calendar.

But despite all of the races and all of the miles, this year meant so much more to me. I made tons of new friends, rekindled a friendship with one, and I had the ability to watch and HELP a few fellow runners have a successful running year.

To my RUN Club-ers - I can not thank you enough for welcoming me into such an amazing, supportive and hysterical group of individuals. I wrote my first blog post about The Club on December 18 and I can say I'm still just as obsessed with you all now as I was that first day. This group has taught me that each and every one of us is an amazing and talented runner, and with the support of each other, we can accomplish ANYTHING! It doesn't matter your pace or your preferred distance, there is ALWAYS someone willing to run along side you. When injury comes our way, we have DOZENS of friends giving their support, prayers and motivation to keep our heads up when we're in a dark place. I love you all! Xo

To my dear friend Janice, I can not thank you enough for introducing me to the wonderful world of Triathlons. Our friendship dates back to second grade and here we are today, being a dynamic duo yet again despite several years of loosing touch. Your support, advice and friendship is something I cherish, and I can't thank you enough for opening my eyes to new possibilities and new adventures. You've made me realize I CAN do anything I put my mind to, and you helped me overcome my fear of getting eaten by a shark during the swim portion. :) I can't wait to Stroke It, Ride It, Pound It with you in 2016 -- watch out bitches, here we come!

Monica, I can not express into words how proud I am of you and all you have accomplished so far this year. I know you've told me many times how grateful you are that I introduced you to the RUN Club, but I'm grateful I've gained you as a friend. I hope you dont have me for yelling at you to "don't
stop running, do it for Jake!". I've been so honored to run by your side and help you train for some big races on your 2015 race schedule. Congrats! YOU need to be proud of yourself! Just like we are all proud of you.

Last and certainly not least, my dearest Taylor -- we are nearly a week away from your FIRST HALF MARATHON! What started out as a shot in the dark ask for 4 family remembers to run this race with me, you are the only one who stuck with it. Being able to run beside you, train you and witness all of your hardwork makes me fall more and more in love with you. Your determination and drive is something I've always cherished about you and it is great to witness it first hand. This half isn't even about me, it's about you! I can't wait to watch you cross that finish line and see that medal around your neck. I am so proud of you, my heart could burst.

Broad Street: Sitting This Year Out

Tuesday, February 17, 2015

"...lottery for the Blue Cross Broad Street Run lottery ends Friday night at 11:59PM. We see
that you were a past registrant for the Blue Cross Broad Street Run, but we don't seem to see your registration for the 2015 race."

This email funneled through my email last Wednesday. My finger was THIS close to registering, but I'm sorry to inform you Broad Street Run, I'm sitting this year out.

Insert runners guilt here.

I've had a GREAT four year run with the Broad Street Run, last year being my absolute favorite by LUCK, but for now I think I'm going to put this race on the back burner for a little while.

There is lots to love about the Broad Street Run: the course is amazing, running through YOUR city is a bit magical, the crowds are encouraging from start to finish, the bling is awesome, there are plenty of water stations, there are plenty of photo opps, the expo is always a fun time, and you usually ALWAYS run into a fellow runner you know!

But there is also lots I DON'T love, which is why I'm sitting out this year: The race is a little too big. With nearly 40,000 runners it's tight, from start to finish. There is some spacing after mile 3, but the final kick is tight and it's hard to pass anyone. Maybe last year because I was a bit faster, I thought the whole course was congested. With that many runners there is also a back up on the subway to get to the start and don't get me started about the line for the porta potties. It doesn't really matter where you start on race day, but for the last two years I haven't been able to start in my proper corral because I've been stuck in a bathroom line or I was barely getting off the subway in time even though I gave myself ample time to get to the start line (I'm very anal about getting to races with PLENTY of time.)

In my Fifteen in 2015 challenge I have for myself, I'm encouraging myself to try out new races and states - so sitting this one out is okay with me. The way I look at it is that I am giving someone else the opportunity to run one of Philadelphia's greatest and fastest races.

Broad Street, you were good to me, damn good to me. I can't wait to come back in the future - I hope you'll have me back. Good luck to all 2015 participants who get selected in this year's lottery. I know you will all do amazing!!!

Motivation Monday X

Monday, December 29, 2014

Today is the last Motivation Monday of the year. Where in the world did the time go? The new year
is quickly approaching and new year resolutions I'm sure are swirling through peoples minds. To be honest, I don't like setting resolutions because after three weeks I usually break them. But as most of you know from reading my posts I create small, obtainable goals which allow me to finish and/or continue over time. So that is exactly what I'll be doing in 2015:

1. In regards to running everyone knows about my 15 in 2015 that I posted about. My first race is on January 10th.
2. I want to focus on my health again - regroup on my food choices and consistent exercise.
3. I want to surround myself with good people -- whether that be new people or people I already know.
4. I want to continue to be happy -- live, laugh, LOVE!
5. I WILL be running another marathon this year and I WILL hit my 4:30 goal.
What are your goals for 2015? I'd love to hear them!

I Am A Runner

Friday, November 28, 2014

I've been sitting on this blog post for a long time....a REALLY long time actually. It's been sitting in my drafts folder -- rewriting versions, updating, deleting, updating, deleting....but I've never had the balls to hit publish.

I'm excited to hit publish today because I am a runner -- and you can be too.

I'm not really too sure why, but I have had a really hard time saying "I'm a runner." Could I say with confidence that I'm a soccer player and I'm a writer -- sure without a doubt I could say that.

But for some reason to say I'm a runner, I've been hesitant.  I feel like calling yourself a runner has a stigma...

  • YOU'RE FAST: runners are fast right? They are the ones running marathons in less than two
and a half hours and half marathons in a little over an hour. Running a 10 minute mile for runners is just a warm up walk for them.
  • YOU'RE TINY: female runners are tiny and fit -- they barely wear any clothes, just a sports bra and little pants. Ripped abs show through their shirts and they don't even know what 'chub rub' is.
  • YOUR FORM IS PERFECT: when you watch elite runners their form is perfect...strides are long and smooth, their runs look effortless. They don't even look tired.
  • YOU'RE RUNNING TONS OF MILES: running only 15 miles a week is NOTHING -- it's more like 40+ miles a week.
  • YOU'RE A HEALTH NUT: no junk food and pumping your body with healthy foods only, 365 days a year, all day every day.
I often had this conversation with my friend Terry at Merion who is a runner. I would ask her, "am I a runner? Can I call myself that?" I always thought yes and Terry would always reassure me with a 'yes' answer, but I also had a co-worker tell me one time that she doesn't think I'm a runner, I just run to challenge myself. Maybe she's right, I don't fit that runner mold...I am none of thee above. If she thinks that I'm sure lots of other people think that as well.

Despite what other people say or think, it took me a long time to get over the runner "stereotype" and to finally admit to myself that YES, I'M A RUNNER! Who cares what other people think or say, it's how I feel!
  • I'M NOT FAST: I am no means a speed demon, I'm a middle of the pack runner coming in right in the middle at races. Was I always in the middle? Heck no!! I use to be in the back, but I've worked hard, DAMN HARD! I've come a long way since starting my running journey back in 2012. My first half marathon time was 2:43 and I've cut that down to 2:01...my first marathon time was 6:18 and I've cut that down to 4:49. I strive to get better each and every day and I will continue to push myself to do so.
  • I'M NOT TINY: I am not skinny...I never will be and I'm okay with that. But despite being on the "larger" side, that doesn't mean I can't run. I say ran loosely, but when I 'ran' my first marathon in Disney I was not fit and I was not healthy. I'm sure people looked at me wearing my marathon medal and said to themselves "how in the HELL did THAT girl run a marathon." (That line stings a little bit because I had a family member actually say that to me while we were in Disney, confirming that I KNEW people had to be defiantly thinking that in their minds.) Running has actually transformed my life which many of you have seen. It has helped me shed weight and more importantly helped me define my muscles, leg muscles in particular. I have some meaty quads on me but you better recognize those babies help me get through those hill climbs during races. I'm body is changing every day because of running and I'm super proud of myself because of it!

  • MY FORM ISN'T PERFECT: My form is far from perfect...I actually have 'dino' arms when I run. Sorry I'm not sorry -- my little dinosaur arms and my occasional little shuffle steps get me across the finish line which is all that matters!
  • I RUN LOTS OF MILES: I run a decent amount of miles a week, my weeks were really long during marathon training. But just because I'm not running 20+ miles a week doesn't mean I'm not a runner or not working hard. Each week is different, everyones schedules are different. We can't compare, just encourage each other that we are getting off the couch and DOING IT!
  • I'M NOT A HEALTH NUT:  I'm far from it -- I love cheeseburgers and french fries. But I know when to reel it in. During marathon training I was running anywhere from 20-45+ miles a week. I could eat what I wanted because of the calories I was burning but with lower milage I know I need to focus on what I'm putting inside me -- but you better believe I will treat myself when I think I deserve it :)
I crave to hit the road -- I crave to tie up my laces, put my running gear on and feel the wind against my face. THAT is what makes me a runner -- the absolute joy I get with each step, letting my mind be at ease, clearing out all of my stressors and enjoying the moment -- the beautiful moment of making myself healthy, taking in the scenery and being in the now.

It doesn't matter how slow or fast you run to be a runner...it's getting out there and joining this wonderful community who does everything they can to support you! It's amazing. I'm so happy to finally be able to say I'm a runner!

Motivation Monday VIII

For a while now I’ve been in desperate need for new running sneakers. I’ve had my current pair since April and have logged several hundred miles in them so far. I can tell the cushion is starting to fade and my feet feel it.

Running is a pretty expensive hobby with race entry fees, gear and sneakers. Over the last few months I’ve been searching the internet for the sneakers I currently have – the Nike Zoom Vomero+ 8 in orange - but I’ve been putting it off because I don’t really have the funds for it right now. Nike of course has new Vomero’s out, but I was searching for other styles that have a lower price tag.

This weekend my mom and I headed up to the outlets in Limerick and they have a Nike Store there. So in I went, looking to find the new Vomero shoe, bending over and paying the $130 price tag (with HOPES that maybeee because it is the outlet the price would be a little lower.) Luckily to my surprise I found my current shoe in a different color (pink and black ohh la la!!) with an AWESOME price of $62!!! Paying $130 for them back in April, I was ecstatic to pay HALF the cost this time around. I’m glad I didn’t go with a different style shoe because I really love this fit which made me think, “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.
Old on left, new on right

I of course will be wearing my orange Vomero’s for a little longer as I transition into my new shoes, but I’m a little sad to fully retire them within the next month or so. I’ve had some great memories in these kicks – setting two new PRs (my half and Broad Street), but I know with this new pair it’s going to be creating new memories – like running 7 races for LIAM!!! (And hopefully setting new PRs!!!)

Motivation Monday Vol. V

“This is the beginning of anything you want.”

This quote really reflects to anything in life. When we start something - whether it is a new project, a race or a class - the outcome is what you make of it. You can go all out or you can only do what is necessary. We all have a clean slate every day in life and we’re the ones making the choice of what the final piece will look like.

As you all know, last Friday was the beginning of a journey I will now share with the cutest little man named Liam. This journey is the beginning of anything WE want and I know we are going to make it the best experience possible. Pam and Liam – I hope you’re ready for the ride!

Last Week Recap
I had a lot of FIRSTS this week. I went to a rodeo for the first time. I went trap shooting for the first time. And I was matched with a running buddy for the first time. I haven’t had a real good first time experience in a long while so it was super exciting to have three! (Actually I had lots of first last weekend too – paddle boarding, Segwaying and CrossFit. I’ve been loaded, wowzer!)

This Week’s Goals
I have a pretty busy week so keeping on track with marathon training is going to be key in addition to staying energized! I have two soccer games, my first Special Olympics cross country practice and 17 miles to log. Here we go!

Cheers to another week friends!

Sweat. Smile. Repeat.

That’s exactly what I did over a long 4 day weekend visiting my best friend Caroline in Pensacola. We stayed active (sweat), we told stories and created new memories (smile), and continued the shenanigans for 72 hours straight (repeat). I strongly encourage everyone to sweat, smile and repeat at least once this week.

This trip could not have come at a better time. I’ve been in a funk, a really bad funk, for about three weeks and there is no better medicine then your best friend. Caroline and I always say it doesn't matter how much time passes from when we see each other or chat on the phone because we pick right up like no time has passed at all. It’s pretty amazing how one person can warm your soul and be your other half. Some higher being had us come together and I can’t thank them enough! Maybe the God of Soccer?

Thank you Caroline for welcoming me into your home and showing me the ropes of Pensacola.Thank you for helping me get life off my mind. And most of all, thank you for being YOU!  I can’t wait to visit again. Stay tuned for a blog post talking about all of them fun Caroline and I had this weekend!

Last Week Recap
I'm happy to say I kept on marathon training track despite being on the road for four days. I crushed a 5-mile pace run on Wednesday at 4 a.m. and I was able to have a 3-mile training run while in Florida. I also did some cross training with CBB – she took me to Cross Fit. You’ll hear more about our fitness activities tomorrow.

This Week’s Goals
1. I wasn’t able to get my 8-mile weekend run in so I’m running it today. Since getting up at 4 a.m., running in the afternoon makes me mental. I psych myself out before I even hit the pavement and I’m losing the mental battle already. But I have no choice. I need to get out there, no matter how slow or fast I go – just gotta MOVE!
2. Remember that Kindle I was telling you about? I’m plugging away through my first book and I absolutely love it. Looking for a good read? It’s called “Plain Truth” by Jodi Picoult.  It might still only be $1.99 for my fellow Kindle lovers. Read it! I’m one chapter away from being finished. Can’t wait to be done this week and start my next book. #BookWormMandee
3. I’m shooting a riffle for the first time this week. Yes you heard me correctly…me + a gun = happening this weekend. Taylor and I will be joining my dad at the gun club this weekend. I’ll be honest, I’m terribly scared of the kickback but my dad keeps telling me I’m a big girl and I’ll be fine. Watch out Outdoor Games, I’m coming for ya!

Motivation Monday Vol. III

Monday, July 21, 2014

Well… it’s officially here. My 18-week marathon training schedule begins this week!!! (EKK!!) Just like I have been doing, now through November 23 you’re going to see me on the streets pounding pavement and racking up mileage. My entire agenda book is filled with my training runs and my weekend long runs are planned out at specific locations. This time around I’m much more focused and ready to kick ass this fall. My Disney Marathon was a great experience but this one can be better. I know it will be better -- running in MY city with my friends and family to cheer me on. It doesn't get better than that. Cheers to a happy, healthy and injury free training schedule. I can’t wait to see where my body, mind and spirit take me on this journey. The past 10 months have been one hell of an experience.

Last Week Recap:
- I had a solid week of running and completed all of my training runs. I ran Philadelphia’s Color Run on Saturday with a few friends and had a peaceful 6-miler at Peace Valley Park in Doylestown. That park is my absolute favorite to run – I could run there every weekend! My mom even joined me on Sunday morning, she walked while I ran. Happy to see us both get out there. Great job, Marmee!
- Sadly not too much progress with my Kindle but this week I’ll be sure to get some good reading in.
- Sunday was National Ice Cream Day. I treated myself and it was amazing :) Click here to see.

This Week’s Goals
1. It’s an exciting week ahead as my marathon training begins. Mileage is starting to pick up and pace/speed runs are beginning. Training is going to be difficult this week because I’m traveling to Florida to visit my best friend, Caroline. She is a fitness mama herself so I know she’ll be supporting me if I need to run a day or two while I’m down there.
2. Two thumbs up for going to Florida! I can not WAIT to see my best friend and to finally see where she is calling “home” over the last two years. I can’t wait to see her puppy and her house and her new life. It’s truly amazing that no matter how much time passes, you pick right up with your best friend like it was just yesterday when you saw each other. Since forever, until forever my sweet Caroline.

May Challenge: H is for Hog... Jog n' Hog

Monday, May 12, 2014

Some of you may remember this post from a previous blog of mine, but this may be new to some. I thought it was absolutely worth the re-post. I have only had ice cream TWICE in the last 9 months which to me is beyond impressive after re-reading this post and my old lifestyle of ice cream in a bowl every night. I would love to participate in Uncle Dave's Jog n' Hog again but i may only be able to do the Half Hogger. (wuss, I know!) If anyone is looking for the perfect way to celebrate National Ice Cream Day, this is your race! Hope you enjoy it as much as I did!!

July 15, 2012

As many of you know, one of my favorite things - if not my absolute favorite thing in life besides family- is ice cream. Today is held extra special in my heart because it’s National Ice Cream Day. But I have to admit, this may be the best celebration to date.

While at work on Wednesday I saw my friends at Visit Bucks County (@VisitBucksPA) tweeted out information on the Jog N’ Hog race series taking place at Shady Brook Farms this weekend.

As I continued to read, I learned that Uncle Dave’s Ice Cream, located right on the farm, was hosting. To me what could be better than going for a run and eating ice cream. As I continued to learn, the race consists of a two mile run, you then eat a quart of ice cream, and then you run back. UMMM WHAT?!?!?!

While I thought this is quite possibly the most sickening thought, I knew I had to do it because this sounds like the most awesome thing I could ever do in my life. Hmm...so who would I sucker into doing this with me?? That was easy --- my running partner, my cousin Jackie, was an obvious yes, and I then forced my sister into doing it (she’s not a runner/never ran a race before) but she was all about it.

Being this run is based on having fun/a good time, the three of us have always called ourselves the three amigos. So to Shady Brook Farm we went as the Three Amigos. (We call ourselves this because we were OBSESSED with the comedy movie “Three Amigos” growing up, we use to watch it almost every day at our Memom’s house.)

The Jog n’ Hog series encouraged people to dress up as pigs, clearly for the race name, but we decided to go a bit off the beaten path. There were plenty of cute piglets along the race.

So at 8:30 a.m. off we went!!! With my sister and cousin beside me we tackled an event the three of us have never done together. (I actually think this is the first thing we’ve EVER all done together in our adult life.) Our sombreros were on, maracas were in hand and our bellies were empty. The occasional talk about hoping to not vomit was also brought up.
The Three Amigos

I could not be more proud of my sister who KILLED the first two miles after not training/really running. She felt great, she looked great. I was so happy to be by her side.

The first two miles were quickly over and as we approached the ice cream station we had about three guys powering their way to the finish line, killing a quart of ice cream and running two miles in nearly 25 minutes. These guys must have really trained. God bless their souls....and stomaches.

The ice cream station was a huge party. Families joined runners as they tackled the challenge of eating the entire quart of vanilla bean ice cream. Other mentally twisted individuals, like myself, brought toppings. I obviously was going to make this thing legit, no playing around. IT’S ICE CREAM PEOPLE!!!

Done and Done!!
So there we stood with several hundred ice cream eaters....some of them looking green and others enjoying themselves. After a few glamour shots with my family, I could see Missy and Jackie were hurting a little bit. Missy dented about 1/3 of her quart...Jackie I am unsure but probably around the same amount. I was pretty disappointed to see the amount of people who cheated. To me, who cares what time you finish! But at the same time I’m happy I didn’t see anyone get sick.

I, however, was in it to win it.

I don’t mess around with ice cream and I sure don’t mess around with an ice cream challenge. About five years back I completed the Friendly’s ice cream 12 scoop challenge. This was going to be a piece of cake.

A quart of ice cream with some chocolate sprinkles and chocolate sauce, and about 20 minutes later, my challenge was completed. My sister and cousin had all the faith in me that I could finish it.

The girls with Uncle Dave himself!
We left the ice cream station and were the last party there (I have a feeling the 15 minute conversation with Uncle Dave, the ice cream owner, hurt us with time a little bit, but I wanted to know the shops history!!!)

So back two miles we went....It was not much of a run but a quick stroll. I seriously had the best time of my life this morning and the ice cream fiesta in my mouth was so worth it!!! It was so nice to finally participate in a race where I was happy the entire time. With all of the races I do they are so competitive and I am too hard on myself. This race was the exact opposite.

The three amigos crossed the finish line together and it was great to see the smiles on everyone’s faces.

The best quote of the day was when a kid asked me how I trained....my response was, “I didn’t, I just showed up.” hahaha Our outfits were a hit and I’m glad I made people laugh today.

Thanks Hog n' Jog and Uncle Dave’s Ice Cream Shop....you have made my national ice cream day a memorable one!

May Challenge: G is for Gear Queer

FACT: I am an absolute Nike gear queer.

There you go, I said it.

I have an obsession with buying Nike apparel, more so than clothes I should be buying to wear to work. (Geez, I need therapy, but that's another story.)

My name is Amanda and I have a shopping addiction.

I know for a fact I am not the only athlete out there that has a preferred choice of workout apparel. Maybe you enjoy Under Armour or go with Lulu Lemon, or your obsession might be Adidas. For me it's Nike and I wouldn't have it any other way.

Thinking back to when I was a little kid, Adidas ruled the soccer world for a very long time. My Bux-Mont team rocked the North Carolina baby blue our entire career -- upgrading every few years with new uniforms. However, it was once I was at Loyola that Nike changed my world.

When it comes to Nike, I enjoy the fit, the fabric material, the comfort and their fashion-forward looks. Their fabric allows my body to breath during warm temperatures, and their cold weather gear kept me super warm this winter as I was taking my training runs outside in 30 degree temps. I feel like each and every week I am seeing new styles and items. For an avid shopper like myself, Nike's marketing team is winning me over.

Are you a Nike fan or looking to try out some Nike gear? Here is my list of favorite Nike attire. I hope you enjoy it as much as I do! :)

Amanda's Nike Go-To's
Pants: Nike Women's Legend 2.0 Printed Capris - This style doesn't only come in printed, you can get them in solids as well. My favorite part of these pants is the thick waist band at the top versus a thinner band. It helps suck me in and always makes me feel tight in my core while on runs.
Sports Bra: Nike Women's Pro Core Printed Sports Bra
Tank Top: Nike Women's Signal Muscle Tank Top - this is by far theeee softest shirt I have ever worked out in. Not only is the comfort out of this world but it shows off your guns!
Tank Top: NIKE Women's Swoosh Out Tank Top - I love Nike dri-fit tanks, but their loose fit cotton tanks are my absolute favorite. It doesn't chafe my arms while running and is perfect during my gym classes.
T-Shirt: Nike Women's Metallic Signal Short Sleeve Shirt - I've never worked out in this shirt, it's more of a weekend running around shirt. I'm sure if I wore it during one of my gym classes it would be fab.
Sweatshirt: NIKE Women's Pro Hyperwarm Pullover Hoodie - This is a perfect hoodie for when temps are anywhere from the 30s to mid-50s. I wore my highlighter pink sweatshirt the entire winter and loved it for every run!! I wore my hood up on colder runs and the thumb holes in the sleeves were perfect for keeping my hands warm.
Sneaker: NIKE Women's Pro Nike Zoom Vomero+ 8 Pullover Hoodie

May Challenge: B is for Broad Street

Sunday, May 4, 2014

"If you run a personal best, whether it’s by 1 second,
10 seconds, 2 minutes, you better celebrate,
because they don’t come very often.”
Meb Keflezighi, 2014 Boston Marathon Winner

Today marked my fourth Broad Street Run. You'd think as a veteran Broad Streeter today would have been an easy journey -- a 10-mile cruise down the heart of Philadelphia I've done since 2011, a route I know by heart, a challenging course in MY hometown.

This year's Broad Street experience was far from easy and quite an emotional one for me. But I can tell you one thing, today was without a doubt the best running experience of my life.

Back in April, myself and thousands of other runners across the country entered the 2014 Broad Street Run lottery - crossing our fingers we would be one of the lucky 40,000 to be selected for this year's race.

I waited and waited until the selection email was sent. "Dear Amanda Piccirilli: Thank you for your interest in the 2014 Broad Street Run. Unfortunately, your entry in the lottery was not selected. Your credit card has not been charged."

Best Cheerleader!
Sigh.

When I entered the lottery for Broad Street this year, I went in saying to myself "Well I have two options:
1. If I do get in that's awesome! Broad Street is actually the weekend of my 10-mile training run for the Wildwood Half Marathon on May 18. Sweet, my signature race and perfect training run, WINNING!! OR
2. If I don't get in, maybe it is a sign that other people should have the chance to experience why I love this race so much each and every year."

So, I didn't get in. Despite being upset and pissing & moaning on Facebook about it, I pressed on with my training for the Wildwood Half -- plugging away long runs at Valley Forge National Park, Peace Valley, throughout Lansdale, anywhere there was pavement I was out! I'm determined to do well this race reason as I have dropped over 30+ pounds and have been pushing my body to new physical challenges because it feels great.

On April 3, Danielle Esposito (who I played high school soccer with) sent me a message on Facebook saying she needed to sell her bib and remembered my bitching on Facebook about not getting in and offered her bib to me! Whattt?!?! Oh my gosh, yes yes yes!

So there I was, a month away from Broad Street and mentally prepared to kick its ass. My training runs have been solid -- my times are times I have NEVER in my life had. I physically felt good after a rough few weeks with knee pain. I was ready to make this run my biotch. I was ready to prove to myself that I could and I WOULD finally go to Broad Street prepared, dedicated and eager to do well. Not just show up and run like I did the three years prior.

All this week I was a mess...my stomach was in knots, the pressure I was putting on myself was making me physically ill. "Amanda, just go out and run like any other run. That is all it is." But it's not. This race was to prove to myself that I am a healthier, happier and better runner than I ever have been before in my life.

And today I did just that. I proved that my training has paid off and my dedication is working. All of the weekend's of not drinking and early morning workouts are showing they were worth it. Today, I crushed Broad Street. (Everyone has there own crush, this was definitely mine!) I soaked in the atmosphere -- let my legs do the running and my heart was smiling as thousands of spectators cheered us on.

I finished the 2014 Broad Street Run and set a new PR for myself with a time of 1:32:46, 20 minutes  FASTER than my previous PR, which was last year's run with a time of 1:52:12. I crossed this year's finish line crying because I did it - I did this for myself. I've NEVER been more proud of myself.

Thank you to my family, my boyfriend and friends for having my back each and every day. This year must have been meant to be...4th BSR and 4th of May. As they say "May the 4th be with you!"

RW Salutes our Furry Friends

Monday, April 14, 2014

I was super excited this morning when I saw that Runner's World is paying tribute to our four-legged friends this week. Dogs are without a doubt man's best friend and they make for great running partners.

Here is Gats and I on a night run! Safety is first!
Little Gatsby and I have gone on runs together and even though he is a small tyke, he kicks my butt!! How long is too long?
We go on short distance two mile runs and by the time we get back to the house he is never out of breath and looks at me with the "what, that's it??!?" face. Do I think Gatsby can go longer? Yes, without a doubt, but I am scared. This is a question I've always wanted to ask the vet.

Curious if your dog is a good running partner? Check out this article from Runner's World talking about the top running dogs. Do any of you run with your pup?

We Will Run

Tuesday, April 8, 2014

I will never EVER forget the horrific images that are now embedded into my brain from the 2013 Boston Marathon. I balled my eyes out that day, feeling so much sorrow for those who lost their lives, those who were injured, those who finished and had their joy quickly vanished, and for those runners who never had the opportunity to cross the finish line.

Millions of others will never forget it either, but it's amazing to see that the city of Boston is pressing forward with its head held high and its heart full of hope and determination. Monday, April 21st will be a very special day for the running community. I'm looking forward to seeing our nation stand up together and I'll be honored to lace up my sneakers that day.

Goo luck to all of this year's runners!

GUEST BLOG POST - May Challenge: R is for Races

Wednesday, May 22, 2013

We make friends throughout our entire life – some in grade school, others not until college, some even POST college, which is exactly where I met Jess. Jess and I met like any normal friends do – via social networking hahaha But no seriously, we met each other through Twitter; I was working at The Reporter and she works at Visit Bucks County. We interacted, coming up with story ideas and before we knew it, we planned a business breakfast meeting. (God, sounds like a date, weird…anyway..) After the meeting we were like holy crap, we’re the same age, we have lots in common, lets go for drinks!! And the rest is history :) We drink together and we run together – I am so thankful I met Jess. She is a bit of a blogging inspiration for me and she has launched www.jessicalawlor.com into a GREAT website. I am so proud of you and I hope I one day can get a following like you do. Cant wait until we run a race again together!!

May Challenge: R is for Races
Whether you’re a seasoned runner with plenty of race medals to prove it or a newbie just hitting the pavement for the first time, there are plenty of fun and challenging races in the Philadelphia region this summer for runners of all experience levels.

In the past two years, I went from a couch potato to a runner, completing nearly 25 races (12 in 2012!) since 2011. There’s nothing better than the sweet feeling of accomplishment after crossing the finish line whether you’ve just run 3 or 13 miles.

Ready to start racing? Here are some of my top race picks for both new and seasoned runners:

For the new runner:

Tex Mex Connection 5K (North Wales, June 26) Ole! Love margaritas as much as I do? When you complete the Tex Mex 5K in North Wales, enjoy a party under the stars, complete with food and drink from The Tex Mex Connection.

The Color Run (Philadelphia, July 15): While this race is unfortunately currently sold out (a few charity spots remain) there’s nothing more fun than watching a sea of runners decked out in all white at the starting line complete the race coated in colorful powder. This race is seriously lighthearted- many people choose to walk, skip or prance their way through the 3-mile course.

The Electric Run (Philadelphia, July 20) Described as a “dazzling night-time 5K run/walk” this race, coming to Philadelphia for the first time this summer, begins at 8:45 p.m. and encourages runners to get their glow on with neon attire and accessories.

For the seasoned runner:

June Fete 5K (Abington, June 2): Ready to tackle some serious rolling hills? This 5K, which benefits Abington Hospital, challenges runners with a tough, hilly course through beautiful Abington neighborhoods. The race kicks off at Penn State Abington, with plenty of parking for all racers.

ODDysey Half Marathon (Philadelphia, June 9): Bored by normal half marathons? The ODDysey throws runners a curveball with twists and turns along the 13.1 mile journey through Philadelphia. With optional challenges throughout the course, a costume contest and a Beer Garden (!) at the finish line, this race is pure fun from start to finish.

Back On My Feet Pajama Loop (Philadelphia, July 21): Roll out of bed and head to Philadelphia for this challenging 8.4 mile loop around the Schuylkill River running path. Pajamas are not only allowed; they are encouraged! Oh, and this race is part of the Stroehmann Back on My Feet 20in24 Challenge, which includes FIVE unique races in 24 hours.

What is your favorite race in the Philadelphia region? Share in the comments below!

My heart is in Boston

Monday, April 15, 2013

I literally cried my eyes out the whole ride home from work today as my heart aches for all of the runners, spectators and families involved in the Boston Marathon incidents today. Just innocent victims on a day that is suppose to be memorable for 27,000 souls. An event that people train months and months for which some weren't even able to finish because of a selfish act of violence.

The cruelness, hatred and sinful lives some people live blows my mind.

For the amount of races I have participated in, that could have been me, my family or my friends.

My heart is in Boston today as I see the pictures, videos and articles. I am scared now to participate in run in three weeks in Philadelphia-- a race with 30,000+ runners.
